Fantomas - “Suspended Animation”

The term “avant-garde”, when used as a genre name, is not particularly specific. It can mean merely just a more abstract brand of progressive rock, or it can be used to describe an entirely different envisionment of the concept of the song itself. Fantomas’ 2006 album, Suspended Animation, is a shining example of the latter. As it proclaims on the back cover, the album consists of “30 miniature holidays in 43 minutes,” with the tracks ordered based on the month of April, 2005 (the first track is titled 4/1/05, the second track 4/2/05, and so on). The music consists mainly of driving, jazz-infused grindcore beats interspersed liberally with frequent soundclips, noises, and a mix of sparse lyrics and bizzare noises from keyboardist/vocalist Mike Patton (lead singer of Faith No More). Built upon that jazz-grind base is layer upon layer of ambient, free-form, and noise, which all comes together with unbelievable results. Truly a treat for any fan of noise or slighty atypical metal, from the opening track to the end.
