Space Team Electra - “Vortex Flower”

Rising from the otherwise forgettable late-nineties Denver music scene, the dream-pop-laden, shoegazy Space Team Electra came out of nowhere to produce one of the most suprising and hauntingly beutiful albums of the decade, The Vortex Flower. Eschewing the feedback and noisy effects characteristic of most of their contemporaries within the genre, STE chose to instead focus on creating a cleaner, more dreamy sound that envelops the listener with their undeniable passion and emotion. The album opens with the spoken-word poem, Transmission, which immediately sets the mood of the album and lets the listener know that what they have in their hands is no ordinary relic of nineties alternative rock. The album’s high point, Luminous Crush, is undeniably beautiful and may illicit tears from the listener.

Truly,  listening to such music is an almost otherworldy experience; from the opening line to the moments of pulsating noise that comprise the album’s end, there are few bands that can create an environment with such power as Space Team Electra, and none that sound alike.
